Subject:dating a reverse painting
Posted By: Bill Tue, Mar 25, 2008 IP: 99.131.2.36

I'm very happy I found this forum as I have acquired several asian items and haven't been very successful in identifying them.
I have a pair of reverse paintings that appear to be pre-20th century though they are in modern looking frames. Some of the clothing appears to be painted with gold and it appears to have flaked off in certain areas. Some of the paint also appears to have flaked off.
Thank you for your time and interest.

I'm quite sure these 2 paintings are not reproductions. Does anyone have a clue as to how old they appear to be? I can post more photos if that would help. Thanks.

Reverse painting on glass made late 19th century to 1920s for tourists, also later for restaurant decoration.

Others might know more but my experience is portrayal peacocks signal Western market 1910s- 1920s as popular 'Art Deco' style.

You can find little discussions reverse-on-glass this forum with search.

Good luck,
Cal
