Subject:Late Qing or Early Republic bowl
Posted By: mikeoz Sat, Mar 17, 2007 IP: 124.189.96.67

I have searched my references for some indication of this bowl's age or origin without success. The porcelain is fine, and the decoration is done with reasonable care, even though the 'seal' marks on the outside are just squiggles.
The device on the base is the Buddhist endless knot symbol, and the peach and leaves decoration in the bowl's interior is similar to some late 19th early 20th century pieces I have, though much more finely wrought.
I would appreciate any comment from the Forum members who might be able to help me.

The endless knot symbol is commonly used during Daoguang reign (1821-1850). This piece is likely to be of late Qing dynasty, somewhere between 1821-1911.

"Bamboo in the moonlight" motif was very popular from Tongzhi until early republic, quite often there is a poem or some verse of calligraphy.
Ark is right that the endless knot is commonly found on pieces from Daoguang onwards but I don`t think this is that old.
I think you were right in the first place & that this is Guangxu/early republic but bigger pics would help.

Phil.
