I inherited this fan years ago and would appreciate help in identifying the artist and translating the Chinese.

Just to clarify, this is one fan.

If I read Mr. Nagy's translation correctly;

The painting side was produced in 1922.

Li Ruiqing wrote the calligraphy on the other side. But he died in 1920.

Was it possible he wrote the calligraphy years prior to the other side being painted?

Or am I mixed up? Thanks!

Dear Steve,
There are two fans. The one shown in the first photo was painted by a painter named Wu Shan (pseudonym Taochang), who was active from the late Qing Dynasty through the early Republican era; the painting is dated 1922. The painter’s years of birth and death are unknown.

The fan shown in the second photo is undated, but we know that its painter, Li Ruiqing, lived from 1876 to 1920.

In other words, we're talking about two fans and two artists.

I.Nagy
