Subject: Help identifying a Japanese artist’s signature and seal
Posted By: MK Mon, Sep 14, 2026 IP: 93.56.162.105

Hello,

Could anyone help me read and identify this Japanese artist’s signature and red seal?

I would be grateful for any suggestions regarding the reading, possible artist, school and approximate period. Comparisons with documented examples would be especially welcome.

Thank you very much in advance.
MK
Japanese art collector

千里 reading is either Chisato or Senri - given name or art-name
From the Edo period to the present day, several Japanese artists have used this name or art-name.
It is difficult to identify a specific artist from among those with the same name or art-name based solely on a single photo (especially an image of a seal showing only a portion of it.
A photo of the entire painting might reveal a little more about the artist.

With regards.

Thank you very much for your helpful response. I am now attaching a photograph of the entire byōbu, as requested. The seal close-up was included in my original post. I hope the complete composition may provide further clues about the artist or art-name.

With best regards,
MK

Thank you for posting the whole picture.
Folding screen with depictions of morning glories, butterfly, and bamboo fences, all rendered in bright, soft colors. It exemplifies the delicate style often seen in modern Japanese painting (from the Taishō to Shōwa period).
I went through every source available to me, but I couldn't find any evidence that would allow me to identify the artist with complete certainty.

With regards,
I.Nagy
