Subject:Raku Chawan
Posted By: Robin S. Sun, Aug 09, 2026 IP: 92.208.66.61

Dear All,

I have been reading in this forum for several years, but this is my first post.

I am currently researching a raku chawan I acquired in Kyoto this spring.

The Chawan in Question has a lustrous black glaze with some reddish streaks and is made in Shioi Form (please find pictures attached). The original Box is unfortunately lost and the box it is currently in has only traces of writing left on it. The chawan bears a mark that is very similar to those of Raku Kichizaemon V (Sonyu) but I am not sure if it actually is the same. I could only find two bowls of similar form online.

One is attributed to Raku Kichizaemon IV (Ichinyu) https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/n1221346680, the other one to the Tamamizu School https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/h1115894281.

Since I can‘t properly read japanese and am relatively inexperienced with raku ceramics, I wanted to ask you, if you can help narrow down the school and time of production and/or give me some advice on where to do further research.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best,
Robin
