The period from the 1880s to the 1910s is known as the “Golden Age of Japanese Cloisonné,” during which a masterful technique was established: depicting motifs of flowers, birds, wind, and moonlight using extremely fine metal wires (such as silver and copper), firing a glass-like glaze onto the work, and then polishing it to a mirror-like finish.
Designs featuring plants such as irises and birds (such as swallows) set against a deep blue or black background are one of the most popular styles representative of Meiji cloisonné.
