Subject:Landscape painting
Posted By: Andrea Fri, Jul 31, 2026 IP: 79.27.78.12

Greetings to all lovers of oriental art. This is supposed to be a painting by Ōkōchi Yakō (1893–1957). Can anyone tell me if there's a title or date in the long inscription? Thanks in advance for any suggestions, and best regards.
Andrea

No doubt, this is a work from Ōkōchi Yakō.
However, it does not have a date on it.

Inscriptions,

When young, I'd not enjoyed the common pleasures,
My nature's basic love was for the hills.
Mistakenly I fell into the worldly net,
And thus remained for thirteen years.
A bird once caged must yearn for its old forest,
A fish in a pond will long to return to the lake.
So now I want to head to southern lands,
Returning to my fields and orchards there.
About ten acres of land is all I have,
Just eight or nine rooms there in my thatched hut.
There's shade from elms and willows behind the eaves,
Before the hall are gathered peaches and plums.
Beyond the dark and distance lies a village,
The smoke above reluctant to depart.
A dog is barking somewhere down the lane,
And chickens sit atop the mulberry tree.
The mundane world has no place in my home,
Modest rooms are for the most part vacant.
At last I feel released from my confinement
Poem of Tao Qian*
At the Tōra-dō Hall, Painted by Yakō-jin

* a.k.a.Tao Yuanming, poet from the Six Dynasties Period
Title of Poem: Returning to Live in the South
(Engl. translation, Chinese Digital Archive)

Upper seal,
河政宜印 Seal of Ko Masayoshi*
Lower seal,
夜江人 Yakō-jin
Corner seal,
方宅十餘畝草屋八九間
About ten acres of land is all I have,
Just eight or nine rooms there in my thatched hut
(One line from the above poem)

* Probably Masayoshi was his original given name.

With regards,

Thank you so much, dear Nagy. Here is the painter's biographical information: Japanese painter Ōkōchi Yakō, whose real name was Masanori, passed away on November 27, 1957, at the age of 64. Born in Yamanashi Prefecture in 1893, he graduated from the Kyoto School of Painting and studied with Kikuchi Keigetsu. In 1921, his painting "Landscape" was selected for the Third Imperial Exhibition, and at the Sixth, he exhibited "Early Spring at Yase." At the Seventh Exhibition, his painting "Autumn at Ohara" received a special prize, and at the Eighth Exhibition, his painting "Spring in the Valley," submitted without examination, also received a special prize. He was later granted examination-exempt status and continued to exhibit until the Shin Bunten Exhibition. After World War II, he became a member of the committee of the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition (Nitten). "Ōkōchi Yakō", Yearbook of Japanese Fine Arts, 1958 edition (p. 172)

Andrea

As for the pronunciation of his real name, the character 宜 also has a “nori” reading, which is not very common.
