The background of the characters (the recessed areas) features a ‘twill weave’ pattern, which resembles fine engravings. This is a typical finishing technique often seen in modern and contemporary replicas, used to make the characters stand out clearly. Also, it has been given an overall uniform green to brown patina, with the golden colour of the underlying brass (copper alloy) exposed only on the bottom where it has been rubbed. This is also a characteristic frequently seen in modern and contemporary antique-style crafts.Furthermore, this particular form of the character ‘徳’ is used exclusively in Japanese. In Chinese, the character ‘德’ is used (one stroke differenece). In other words, there is no doubt that this incense burner was made in Japan.
