In the 7 Fujisawa: The Yugyō-ji Temple of the tokaido, what is the connection between the shinto torii in the foreground and the Yugo-ji temple on the hill in the background?

Until the Meiji Restauration the Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines were amalgamated. The Shinto gods were interpreted as manifestations of Buddha.
Therefore, until the separation of the two religions,in many cases Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples stood side by side on the same premises.

Google & AI Say:

This image is a famous Ukiyo-e woodblock print titled "Fujisawa: Yugyo Temple" (Fujisawa: Yūgyōji), created by the renowned Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige (also known as Ando Hiroshige). Key Details of the Artwork:

>> Series: It is the 7th station in Hiroshige's masterpiece series, "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō" (specifically the Hōeidō edition).

>> Historical Context: Created around 1833–1834, the series documents Hiroshige's journey from Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto along the Tōkaidō road.

Scene Description:

>> Foreground: A large torii gate stands on the left, marking the entrance to a sacred area.

>> Figures: Travelers, including four blind men with walking sticks, are shown crossing a wooden bridge.

>> Background: The Yugyō-ji Temple (also known as Shōjōkō-ji) is perched on a wooded hill overlooking the village of Fujisawa. This temple is the headquarters of the Ji-shū school of Pure Land Buddhism.

Cheers,
Stan
