Derived from the title of the picture, the picture depicts a children's playground game played in a group, which is thought to be an Edo period Japanese variation of the game of tag "onigokko" -in modern Japanese.
One player is the oni (鬼=devil), one is the oya (親=parent) and all the others are Ko(子= children). The children try to hide behind the parent. The oni tries to grab the last child in line. The parent spreads out his arms and tries to ward off the oni.
As they run, the row of children begins to sway like a serpent or a whirlpool.
The two boys facing each other in front of the picture decide who will be the devil and parent by flashing their rock-paper-scissors hand signs.
Looking at the patterns of children's kimonos, they are clearly divided into two camps in the spirit of the Boshin War,
