Subject:Identification and translation Japanese Bronze?
Posted By: David Sat, Jan 11, 2025 IP: 62.82.115.1

Dear All
Hope everything is well with you. My friend has this what he thinks is a japanese water bucket in bronze. He thinks the script underneath is Kanji and it does look like that but the 12 horses around the top shoulder remind me more of Chinese horses in Jade which one sees often in different poses. Each of them holds a different position. Footrim is flat and shallow just enough to keep the central section off the ground. Is it Japanese or Chinese? Is it really just a utilitarian piece?. Seems odd to sign something that would have been attached to a yoke and bashed about all over the place? And please can I,Nagy, tell me what the script reads?

Best wishes and many thanks for any help in advance.
David

Japanese incense burner.
It is thought to be about 100 years old.
Marking reads,
金屋五郎三郎 Kanaya Gorosaburō

Famous metal-caster dynasty. Founded in Kyoto during the Kanei period. The name has been passed down from generation to generation since then. In 2015 the 16th generation inherited it.

With regards,
I.Nagy
