Subject:Mystery Bead
Posted By: Leonard Bodin Thu, Jan 02, 2025 IP: 174.6.88.55

I was given this bead from a friend whom I have purchased many jade pieces in the past. This is an unusal bead. Possibly Tibetan as it has similarities to DZI beads.

It has a specific gravity of 2.85, consistent with Nephrite. By what process did they obtain the texture and the look of the whitened background areas? I have never seen this before.

Your bead looks to be a Tibetan Dzi bead. These beads are typically Himalayan agate and I believe fossilized agate from marine vertebrates. Daniel Lopacki, an acquaintance of mine who passed away recently specialized in beads. His YouTube videos are still up and very informative. Not sure if he worked with old Dzi beads.
