Subject:Original/High Quality Reproduction of Yu Zhonglin's Peacocks on Crape Myrtle
Posted By: Violet Tue, Dec 24, 2024 IP: 97.89.170.63

I'm searching for more information about this piece and have several questions about it:

1. Could this be an original painted by the artist?

2. If it's not an original, why would such a high quality reproduction have been created so soon after the piece's original completion by Yu Zhonglin in 1978? Was he already quite famous at the time?

3. More information about the red stamps present throughout the painting. I understand they are either the artist/studio seals and/or seals made by previous collectors, is that right? (Note: There is an additional seal visible in the full-length photograph that I could not upload a closeup of.)

Background:

My parents own this painting and acquired in in the early 90s from the wealthy ex-wife of a family member. From their recollection, the piece was somewhat aged when they required it and the damage visible in the photos was already present. As you can also see, the painting is affixed to a folding wooden block in 4 connected sections. It appears to be on silk and also seems to have been painted by hand. It was quite difficult to investigate the seals/chops to see if they could offer clues to its history or potential authenticity, but my research does show that a true original copy of this work (acquired from the artist's family) was sold at auction in 2022. I'm not sure if this rules out the possibility of it being an original entirely... could the artist have created another copy of the work in this folding 4-piece format?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!!

繁花己如雲錦艶
不勞白翎開畫屏
巳未夏 新磐
The profusion of luxuriant flowers is like clouds
and the white plumes easily open the screen
In Summer of the Year of Earth-Sheep (1919)
by Xinpan (New rock - pseudonym)

Upper seal,
伸盤 Xinpan - Probably original given name
Lower seal,
伸盤學士 Xinpan the Scholar - Studio name

Taking into account the size of the work's surface, the artist's entire arsenal of seals is deployed, such as starting seal, corner seals, and leisure seal.

This screen is not Yu Zhonglin 喩仲林, but the work of a certain painter with the pseudonym Xinpan 新磐, dated from 1919.
From the same Xinpan, I found a work on one of the Chinese sites. It does not give any information about the artist himself and dates the work to the Republic of China era.
