Subject:Satsuma identification
Posted By: Darren Sun, Dec 15, 2024 IP: 27.96.222.132

I have just bought these pair of 15cm vases with money from my Mum for my Birthday. I have always wanted a pair of Japanese vases and I found these to be the most aesthetically pleasing .
They have a 'Satsuma 'mark but otherwise I know nothing . They were sold as antique and are a little display worn but have no damage or repairs .If anyone can help dating and deciphering the marks I would be very happy , many thanks .

蓬萊新造 Hōraishin-zō Made Anew by Hōrai

According to some sources until the end of the 1890s there was a kiln named Hōrai-yamagama (蓬萊山窯)in the vicinity of Arita. Connection cannot be proven.

With regards,
I.Nagy
