Subject:Painting: Identify Characters and Seal
Posted By: Miano Tue, Dec 03, 2024 IP: 175.176.24.246

Hello Friends,

I would like to identify the artist and/or period.

It is a painting on a scroll with calligraphy (characters) and seals.

The outline of Confucius; Kong Qiu (孔丘) is beautifully rendered with Chinese characters. The first time I have encountered this.

Would you be able to translate the characters/seals, advise any artist whom this work may have attributed to and the period(60-year cycle)?

Finally, is this Japanese or Chinese?

Kind regards,

Miano

The portrait is a reproduction.
Inscriptions,
孔子象 Portrait of Confucius
孔德成敬題 Respectfully inscribed by Kong Decheng
孔德成 Kong Decheng (Seal)

夫子之道忠恕而己矣
德成
The teacher's theory is just loyalty and forgiveness
Dencheng
孔德成 Kong Dencheng (Seal)

Seals on the right side,
山本正印 Seal of Shan Benzheng
or in Japanese, Seal of Yamamoto Masashi
珍石 Zhenshi
(Neither seals are that of Kong Dencheng)

Kong Dencheng / Kung Te-cheng 孔德成 1920-2008
was a 77th generation descendant of Confucius.

With regards,
I.Nagy
