Subject:Help in reading cartouche on actor portrait
Posted By: Irwin Mon, Oct 28, 2024 IP: 174.127.209.134

Hi,
I can partially read the green cartouche. The last four characters read お秀の方 (Ohide no kata). The character preceding those have me a bit baffled with two of them reading 立め, I believe. Would appreciate help in reading those first characters and confirmation of my reading of the last four.
As to the red cartouche, I believe the characters read 中お福助, the name of the kabuki actor Nakamura Fukusuke, in this case likely Nakamura Fukusuke, 4th generation. (Name usually seen written as 中村福助.)
With thanks,
Irwin

Partly cursive script mixed with running script.
Reading;
愛妾お秀の方 Aishō Ohide no kata
中村福助   Nakamura Fukusuke

Nakamura Fukusuke in role of Ohide the beloved concubine

(The cursive form of 村 is very close of hiragana
お)

With regards,
I.Nagy

Nagy-san,
In my web search I saw the prefix 愛妾 used with Ohide no kata, but for the life of me, I just couldn't reconcile it with the script in the cartouche. Thank you for aiding my continuing education!
Irwin
