Subject:Small Satsuma Box - help with age and reading marks?
Posted By: Steve Tue, Oct 22, 2024 IP: 185.228.19.47

Hello All - I have (to my eye) a quite stunning intricate little porcelain box that based on a cursory search is likely Satsuma, and I'm guessing is an antique, but am not sure. Hoping someone here might be able to provide an assessment as to it's age.

Especially, I am hoping someone might be able to read the stamps on the back. Pardon my ignorance but I am unsure which way the characters are meant to be read, so I will post pictures in both directions.

It's about 3.5 inches in diameter.

Any other information is highly appreciated, and thank you all in advance.

Steve

My reading;
滝澤永生 Takisawa Ei

Besides the fact that there is no Shimazu cross, I can't find anything about the name.

With regards,
I.Nagy

With the help of your translation, I've been able to find a satsuma bowl for sale with markings very similar to mine (though this piece includes a cross, and additional markings in black).

The gallery selling this piece is indicating it is from a "Takizawa Kiln" in the late 1800's. Though I'm struggling to find anything about such kiln as of yet.

I'll also attach a (somewhat poor) picture of the markings from their website. I wonder if anyone has heard of such a "Takizawa" Kiln?

Thank you again for the help Nagy.

Here is another picture of the markings flipped the other way, and another picture of the top of the box if it helps. Thanks again!
