Posted By: Sergey Mon, Sep 02, 2024 Thanks! I have also heard it might be 12th century. What kind of features might differentiate 12th and 14th century celadon bowls? |

Posted By: Robert Tue, Sep 03, 2024 Hi. I think the base is one important feature to look at. The bases of 12th century Korean celadon bowls and dishes tend to be carefully glazed, including the foot-ring. Most have three white refractory clay deposits arranged neatly on the base (hopefully my image uploads). These white scars are from the firing supports used in the kiln. Also, the further back you go into the 12th century the glaze color tends to get better (more of a fine bluish-green color) and the crackle (crazing) disappears. Finally, compared to the shallow lotus leaf carving on your bowl the carving on a 12th century bowl would be deeper and more well-defined. Therefore, although your bowl is unlikely to be 12th century I would be willing to go second-half of the 13th century. |
