Subject:Marble inlaid blackwood oriental recliners
Posted By: Jade Wed, Jun 26, 2024 IP: 27.125.132.88

Greetings!

I have a pair of marble inlaid wood recliners. Recently, the wood backing of the marble gave way and unfortunately, the marble fell out and cracked in half. I have since contacted a reputable furniture company hoping to have the recliner restored.

The furniture restorer mentioned that the recliner is a very rare and and good piece of blackwood which is worth restoring. He opined that the recliner has been damaged as normal chemical lacquers have been used to varnish the recliners. He suggested sending in the recliner for a full overhaul, meaning his team of professional craftsmen will have the wooden joints taken apart, scrapped off the existing chemical lacquers and replace it with an organic "tree sap" lacquer to restore its natural shine.

My question is, would it be worthwhile to have the recliner undergo full restoration? The quotation for restoration is pretty steep (since the organic tree sap lacquer will be applied, and I will need to send BOTH recliners in at the same time), or just have the marble stuck back together (another company can do this simple job with much less cost involved).

Also, may I ask what type of wood was used to make this recliner? (the restorer mentioned blackwood which is a generic term for most woods?).

Any advice / comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
