Subject:Who is this kano painter?
Posted By: Ger Fri, Jun 21, 2024 IP: 77.168.144.202

Please see these two paintings showing go and music. The signature was given as: 法橋養巌, the seal as: 大楽養巌. And it was understood to be a kano school 狩野派 painting.
However I found only one reference to this painter, from which I could not deduce more information due to my lack of knowledge of the Japanese language:

右下に「法橋養巌」という落款が押されています。このことから、作者は萩藩お抱えの狩野派の絵師 大楽養巌だと判明しました。
毛利氏は大内氏の追善供養をしばしば行っているので、この絵は供養の時に描かせたものだと考えられるそうです。

Google: The signature 'Hohashi Yogan' is stamped on the lower right. From this, it was determined that the author was Yogan Daigaku, a Kano school painter employed by the Hagi clan.
Since the Mori clan often held memorial services for the Ouchi clan, it is thought that this painting was made at one of the memorial services.

琴棋書畫圖 Pictures of koto, go and shoga or calligraphy and painting

Basically, the machine translation is not bad but needs some adjustments:
① The corect reading of 法橋養巖: Hokkyō Yōgan
(法橋 Hokkyō - Bridge of Law - a Buddhist honorary title given to painters, poets etc, artists in the Edo period.)
② The correct reading of the painter's name:
大樂養巖 Dairaku Yōgan

Otherwise, I could only find the same reference online.

With regards,
I.Nagy
