Subject:Japanese Woodblock Identification Help Needed
Posted By: BL Fri, Jun 14, 2024 IP: 70.107.185.131

Hello,
The image below is coming up for auction. The lot description is that it is an original woodblock print by Hokusai and is entitled "Waterfall Penance". It does not show up in an on-line database of Japanese woodblock prints. Can anyone confirm the information in the description? Thank you.
BL

If you are going to bid, do a lot of research. A similar print was sold at artelino.com for $750. There are differences between this print and yours; the signature for example. Here is part of the description:

"This print was issued as the only and the posthumous edition in the 3rd quarter of the Meiji period. The design was based on the original, preparatory drawing by Hokusai which was never published in his life time."

See the link below. You will need an Artelino account to view the link in the Artelino archive. They do have a trial and you may be able to view it without an account.
