Subject:Solid Silver letter opener?
Posted By: Fouad Fri, Aug 25, 2023 IP: 196.115.89.93

Hi everyone,

I hope you all well.

I have this letter opener, or a medical tool (maybe) it's made of solid silver.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards
Fouad

Looks to me like a quill knife. Late Victorian to Edwardian period. Probably sterling or coin silver handle with steel blade.

Hi there,
Have you been able to locate any marks (makers marks, stamps, this kind of thing) anywhere on the item? You may need to examine it closely all over as often they are hidden. With the help of a makers mark, the piece could be attributed and more accurately dated. My esteemed colleague above is correct with the date based on stylistic cues however that is only an approximate.
Chinese Export Silver is gaining huge popularity over the last 5-10 years and it's only getting more sought after so an accurate attribution would undoubtedly be beneficial for you if you are looking at reselling the piece.
