Subject:Pu Ru Paintings
Posted By: Pickles Sat, May 27, 2023 IP: 198.27.235.88

Hello,
Posting (2) Pu Ru paintings from my Dad's collection. As mentioned in my first post, my Dad passed away recently, age 90's. He was born in China, immigrated to San Francisco, CA around 1950, saved his pennies and had help from a relative to open a bookstore in Chinatown. He was well read, self taught in the stock market, invested wisely in real estate, and had a love for Chinese paintings - purchasing many over the decades and also sold some for tens of thousands (the highest being 40k around 15 years ago). Myself and my siblings had a language barrier with my Dad and didn't know much about the paintings except for his pride and love for them. We weren't sure if they were all as valuable as he always said. We are trying to figure it out now as we sort out everything after his passing.

Thank you for any information you may be able to share. We welcome any feedback.

Pic. No.2
My reading and rough translation of the poem by Pu Ru
落葉紛無数 西風送雁群 霜林石適冷 暮色入山深
何處向高隠 長吟散素襟 松間時小坐 忘樓望玉琴
溥儒
There are countless fallen leaves
West winds set off the wild geese flocks
Frosted forest is cold like stone
Twilight goes deep into the mountains
Somewhere there is a hiding place high above
I am singing a long song in an open coat
Sometimes I sit down for a while among he pines
I forget the palaces while longing for the jade zither
Pu Ru
Upper seal,
舊王孫 Jiuwangsun Descendant of Old Kings
Lower seal,
溥儒 Pu Ru

With regards,
I.Nagy

An update … this piece sold at Christie’s May 2024 auction. Very thrilling experience!

I liked these two most. When you started to post our fathers collection (Reminder: https://www.asianart.com/phpforum/index.php?method=detailAll&Id=147808 ). He had painters I do not appriciate the same way like Zhang Daqian and Xu Beihong.
I hope in the end you learned enough to like the paintings too and everybody selected a painting or artwork as a link to the father and the family heritage.

Best wishes, Peter

Peter, this message is over a year late. I referred a friend to this forum for her own artwork questions, then started going down memory lane with some of my posts. I'm sorry I missed your reply back in August 2024! I learned so much about the artists and works - each one, visualizing why my father picked them and what he saw. The live auctions were very moving, hard to believe that some of the works we grew up were on our screens (streaming live auctions from Hong Kong).

Thank you again!!
