Subject:Need help identifying these bronze vases
Posted By: Roger Mon, Sep 09, 2019 IP: 2601:281:c202:b68a:d Hi All, Found these lamps yesterday and am hopeing you can shed some light on their past, if possible. Do you think they are Japanese and do you think they are old? They are quite large and heavy. They are unmarked. Thank you in advance! |

Posted By: Larry Tue, Sep 10, 2019 They are Chinese, not Japanese ...archaic gold-splashed vessels --hard to say the age but quality looks good. |

Posted By: rat Tue, Sep 10, 2019 These are Chinese, made fairly recently as decorative items but in the style of an archaic bronze shape called a fanghu, or "squared-off (rather than round) hu". These were pretty common during the Han and late Zhou periods, but yours have zoomorphic decoration that are seen not Han but in much earlier Shang and Western Zhou bronzes such as this one: https://www.freersackler.si.edu/collections/missing-art-objects-from-the-dr-paul-singer-collection-of-chinese-art/categories/bronze-ritual-vessels-weapons-and-fittings/#jp-carousel-155175 |
