The Himalayas are a constant subject in Laxman Shrestha’s compositions, at times clearly visible, while at others concealed beneath layers of clouds, floating forms, and colours. He conceives his idealised landscape and mountains on the canvas by way of patches of grey, burnished ochre, blue, venetian red, umber and an underplay of black. He draws on his astute and expert use of colour to create fluid forms of monumental dimensions from the negative space, as if emerging from the canvas. This skilful counterpoising of colour is instrumental in producing an exceptionally unique effect. Such a technique introduces the element of vividness, uncommon since the 1980s. Such constructed renderings initiate a dialogue with the artwork, that prompts further detailed discussion, as well as providing for a source of pleasure or a particular mood. The landscape in Shrestha’s paintings seem to appear and disappear by way of an intense play of colour and fluid form, leaving a thin line of distinction between representation and abstraction.
