A Carved, lacquered wooden image of a Luohan
China
circa 17th-18th Century
height: 21 1/2" (55cm)

The Buddhist saint is seated in a position of meditation, his hands resting at his knees, his smiling face with an expression of benevolent wisdom, his moustaches, beard and eyebrows arranged in stylised curls; his luxuriant hair falls in waves to his shoulders. His robes are arranged in graceful folds, a short undergarment tied at his waist. Traces of the original cloth patterns of his robes remain, more recent auspicious characters bless the reverse. A consecration aperture to the rear. The loss of surface to the lower areas below the waist is consistent with the shape of the figure, and he has minor restorations.
