Silver alloy image of Vairocana
Tibet
Circa 18th Century
Height: 2 ½” (6cm)

This finely worked image was made to be carried in a personal amulet box or gau. The Central One of the Five Dhyani Buddhas – Vairocana is known as the personification of Wisdom, with his hands in dharmacakra mudra, setting in motion the teachings of the Buddhist doctrine.

Such silver alloy images seem to have been popular in the 18th Century.
