Important Indian cabinet
Gujarat or Sindh

This large cabinet has been produced in India for the European market. A few examples of Sadeli decorated objects of the same group are known upon which a smaller XVIth century cabinet and a game board of the same period in the collections of the V and A (Jaffer 2002).

This cabinet which shape and size is inspired by the spanish bargueños has little comparable

existing examples, one other large cabinet (unpublished) is in the collections of the V and A and another one but without drop front is in the collections of Charlecote Park, Warwickshire,published in “Furniture from British India and Ceylon”, by Amin Jaffer, V and A publications London 2001, fi g76.

Very few cabinets of that size survive, approximately less than a dozen still exist in private and public collections.
