Black and gold lacquer suzuribako
Rimpa style (after the 18th c great artist, Korin)
19th century.
Length, 9.5”; width, 8.5”

A splendid black and gold lacquer suzuribako with pewter carvings, inkstone and silver suiteki. Upon its lid, in gold lacquer, a young boy with his mother-of-pearl flute leans against the flank of a great pewter and mother-of-pearl ox, a creature he has managed to capture after considerable hardship. This piece is extraordinary in concept, technique and choice of materials - its symbology, “the acquisition of enlightenment.”.
