cloisonné enamel high-shouldered vase with silver mounts
c1906
Height, 14.75”

A rare and extraordinary cloisonné enamel high-shouldered vase with silver mounts. This spectacular vase, using the artist’s own invention, “nagare-gusuri”, is a striking example of this difficult-to-achieve “rainbow-colored,porcelainous glaze.” On its brilliant surface, the artist has designed a glorious dance below the cascading multi-hued flambe, of moriage crabs - each defined by gold wires.

Kawade Shibataro mark on base.

N.B. For a similar vase, see”Japanese Art & Artists of Today, Cloisonne Enamels. The Studio” by Prof. Jiro Harada, June 1910.
