Geometric Design Chuba
18th century
Qianlong period (1736-1795)
Tibet

A fine example of a Tibetan front-opening Chuba made from Chinese silk brocade. The ground silk is woven in imperial yellow with a complex geometric design usually associated with the Qing imperial household. The sleeves are inset with bands of Chinese brocade and, unusually, Indian silk brocade. This was worn by a dignitary of the Dalai Lama’s court, possibly a high-ranking noble or lama.
