Crafting
Beauty in Modern Japan
This exhibition features some of the best Japanese art crafts from
the paswt 50 years including ceramics, textiles, lacquer, metal, wood,
bamboo, glass and dolls. The exhibition shows how the beauty, skill
and modernity found in these pieces draws on the strength of traditional
craft skills.

KINKARAKAMI:
Takashi Ueda and the art of Japanese leather paper
A
unique craft, once almost lost to the world, will be showcased at
a new exhibition at the Daiwa Foundation Japan House. Craftsman Takashi
Ueada is the only practitioner in the world of kinkarakami, the making
of gold-embossed wallpapers from Japanese paper (washi).
Admission is free.

Narrative and Desire: Masterpieces of Indian painting in the British
Museum

Textures: Jun Tomita and the Art of Kasuri
Jun Tomita
is a leading exponent of kasuri or ikat dyeing. In this traditional
technique, threads are bound together and sections are dyed before
being woven. The treated thread is woven into fabric so that each
piece is completely unique in texture and pattern. The result is work
of a startling beauty.

The
First Emperor: China’s Terracotta Army
From 13 September, the Museum will play host to a number of the world-famous
terracotta warriors from Xi’an in China. The First Emperor: China’s
Terracotta Army is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these amazing
artefacts and to explore the legacy of China’s First Emperor, Qin
Shihuangdi.
