Lokesvara

Jatamukuta Lokesvara
Khasa Malla Kingdom, West Tibet/West Nepal
circa 14th century
Parcel gilt silver, gilt copper alloy, and pigment
height: 19 cm / 7½ in

This beautifully cast parcel gilt silver image of Jatamukuta Lokesvara comes from the Khasa Malla kingdom in west Nepal, west Tibet, circa 14th century. The Khasa Mallas were a powerful ruling family who held sway over large portions of west Nepal and west Tibet between the 12th and the mid-14th centuries. As Himalayan scholar Ian Alsop has shown, the Khasa Mallas were devout Buddhists and great patrons of the arts, and under their reign a distinctive and very fine bronze-casting tradition flourished.
