This looks to be a Thai painting, showing an attentive deity with hands in the worshipful pose called "wai" before a figure clad in the robes of a monk, who may be speaking instructively. This scene may be rooted in one of the stories called "Jatakas", which tell anecdotes from the life of the Gautama Buddha. Perhaps the deity is Indra, the green-skinned Hindu God known as Sakra to Buddhists, who Thai devotees consider to be King of the Nats (demigods also called Devas). I hope others can speak with more authority than I'm able to summon on this subject.
