Subject:Question about appropriation and Japanese Pottery
Posted By: T Wed, Jan 25, 2017 IP: 208.124.203.210

Hi everyone,

This isn't a post about a specific piece of pottery, but a question about whether this would be considered cultural appropriation.

I am working on a design for a program book with the theme of "Unbreakable" and the visuals/ concept behind it are heavily influenced by the technique of Kintsugi. The concept is that our history and cracks, so to speak, make us who we are, make us stronger, and being imperfect is valuable. Kintsugi sees the repaired item as more valuable than before its journey, and is reflective of one's own personal journey. In the end, we are unbreakable, not because we haven't been broken, but because we put ourselves back together, now stronger, our flaws informing who we have become.

Would it be considered cultural appropriation, even though we would not be separating the aesthetic of Kintsugi away from its philosophy?

Thank you!

NO!

This is PC gone feral. You are using a perfectly good analogy to explain your thesis.

Good luck with it. It sounds interesting.
