Subject:Japanese blue and white bowl
Posted By: Garth Mon, Jun 09, 2014 IP: 86.46.115.122

A recent acquisition is this blue and white bowl which looks like Imari-ware. Any ideas on the mark and how old it may be? The stitch repair suggests its older than Superglue.

Any help appreciated

Garth

Hi Garth,

You're right I think.... it has age. The mark is the (Chinese) character for Qian or Chíen as in Qianlong. It was used on Japanese Hizen porcelain. Written in this form points to a dating of 1790-1810.

Regards,

Arjan

Hi Greg,

Sorry I don't remember were it came from. I have found it on internet years ago and saved it on my PC.

Arjan

It's marked 'Ken', Japanese Imari, late Edo period.

See "Arita - Ken - Qianlong" at Gotheborg page link below.
