Subject:Marking identification - any help appreciated.
Posted By: Nick Wed, May 15, 2013 IP: 94.168.99.238

Hi there,

I'm looking for some information on 3 different items. The first is this porcelain container. Unfortunately the marking is quite faded, but maybe still possible to make out.

I will post the other items subsequently - please see the provided link for all the images.

Many thanks to anybody who takes the time to look into this for me.

Nick

The mark reads "Made by Hichozan Fukagawa (Hichozan Fukagawa Sei) and was in use during the Meiji period (1868-1912).

These items seem to have been intended to serve as cologne bottles for export to the West. Here's another one in a polychrome motif and signed on the stopper as "Made by Zoshuntei Sampo. The Hichozan and Zoshuntei studios both had artists working at the old Hirado kiln center at Mikawachi, where they were employed by the Fukagawa company, while also painting porcelain under their own marks as well.

Best regards,

Bill H.

They aren't drawing lots of attention from bidders if the auction at the below link is any indication.

Best regards,
