Hello Everyone!

I've been studying Chinese Archaic Jade for almost a year now and always on the lookout for questionable pieces to both share and learn some knowledge. To kick things off, I am very curious about your views on the Chinese Archaic Jade market right now as well as the outlook going forward.

Found this piece of Chinese S dragon jade pendant off Weibo, posted by Gu Yu Ju, which looks nice, but something about it makes me uncomfortable. What do you think?

No hope of being genuine. The carving and material is too crude and not well organised. Compare it with the piece from Han tomb from capital museum.

The little curly bits and the feet of the dragon are too crude as well to get an idea of what it is trying to represent . Very poor carving that is trying to use the old way of carving but has not mastered the spirit of real han jade.

Its in the style of a han piece but doesnt look like the material that would have been used by the han (Note that they have appeared to make it look "manually made" as opposed to electrically tooled) a han piece would have been off-white, creamy yellow or perhaps a very light mint green.I have never seen a pei in this colour!!

Not a bad repro though if its cheap enough.

PS by the time you have bought a few bad repro's through dodgy suppliers then you could have bought a good archaic piece through christies for the same money (and they are often ex museum or private collection) archaic jades are not as expensive as people think!!!
Qing jades can be 100x the price
When it comes to selling your jades on, then no one will argue with an ex-sothebys/christies provenance

Look close, and you see the sloppy workmanship, plus the wrong gloss.

Finally I find a forum with good eyes for Chinese Jade. Not easy. Quite a number of delusional private forums out there. Do share if you know of any interesting sources of information. =)

Actually, I beg to differ on the comparison with Han pieces, or more specifically Western Han examples. Although the above piece is unlikely genuine, it is attempting to copy stylistic carvings popular during the Warring States period, instead of the Han dynasty.

Here is a photo of a warring state S pendant note the Hetian jade used and the fine carving. This one comes from Shandong museum.
