Subject:Chinese peachbloom vase?
Posted By: Mike Sun, Nov 11, 2007 IP: 67.53.0.28

I recently found this vase in an antique shop. It appears to be Chinese - the base and shape seem to point in that direction. The glaze is very thick and covers the entire interior as well as the exterior. I'm thinking it's probably 19th century but could it be earlier, or later?

Mike,

Is more inspired by jun ware, see photo. Junyao stoneware, fired to buff or brown color where no glaze.

Photo shows how different glazes composition added to make different colors. Yours also different glazes. One of glazes on yours has large particles, maybe not melted in kiln.

Peach bloom one glaze with small areas separated out during firing, fired different colors, pink with green-to-gray color. For this reason called 'transmutation' glaze. Often flowed during firing to show fine white porcelain ware at lip, neck.

You do not say or show ware, bottom of vase.

Many modern potters including USA, Europe, use glaze recipes imitate old Chinese.

IMHO modern studio pot, handsome, but can not tell where made.

Do web search find authentic peachbloom glaze, you will see difference.

Good luck,
Cal

IMHO, this vase is mid 20th or later. But the transmutation of the glaze is more like a flambe instead of a peachbloom.

I like the glaze effect, thenks for sharing.

Later, much later. A brief look at through any decent book dealing with Qing dynasty monochromes will tell you that this is NOT one of the shapes upon which this glaze will be found.

Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't sure how to describe the glaze but something closer to Junyao wares makes sense.

I've posted a photo of the base below. There's a large piece of porcelain stuck to one side of the base. The crack is from the firing and doesn't run through to the interior.

Mike,

Your potter have firing problem, maybe haste, not let ware dry slow and relax.

Here selection jun-type foot, sorry poor photos and scan.

Can see different from your white fine-grain stoneware and some different glaze action.

Good luck,
Cal

Mike,

Here picture good peachbloom water pot. Lacks desired green flashes except specks at neck. Little underfired. 8.9 cm high, 14 cm wide.

Good luck,
Cal
