Posted By: PyroManiac Sat, Nov 18, 2006 These brightly colored wares are ranging from green, turquoise, yellow and purple are called Awaji wares from kilns on Awaji Island in Japan. They date to the early 20th century and were widely exported to the west. |

Subject:Kyoto ware =Awaji pottery?
Posted By: KK Mon, Nov 20, 2006 Thanks, Judy, PyroManiac and Edward. Both what so called Kyoto ware and Awaji ware have very similar style and identical finely crackle glazes and clay body. Awaji piece often has a square kiln mark with Japan on its base. The unmarked pieces often termed Kyoto ware But Kyoto is not in Awaji Island. So why Kyoto ware??? Is there a separated kiln around Kyoto make similar ware? |
