Subject:Chinese Reverse Painting on Glass
Posted By: Donna Icenhower Mon, Feb 04, 2002

I have three paintings done in reverse painting of a Chinese King, Queen and Princess (see images).
Can you give me any information on the age and the history of these!
Thank you,
Donna

Subject:Reverse Glass Paintings

The first two are actually ancestral portraits of a Qing dynasty civil official and his wife of the fifth court rank (I believe the bird in his chest badge to be a pheasant, but it is not very clear). These are normally done in paper or silk on paper, rarely in reverse glass. They would date from around 1900 - 1930 (many were done posthumously and even into the republican period for families to honour ancestors. The last one is a trade painting of a beauty and unrelated to the previous pair, probably earlier, ca 1875-1908.

Thank you very much for taking the time to appraise the paintings. They actually are paintings on glass rather that paper or silk. Would you have any idea of their value?
Thank you,
Donna
