Subject:help read cartouche Tokaido 15 Hokusai
Posted By: francis minvielle Sat, Mar 02, 2024 IP: 2a01:e0a:871:8270:52

The scene of this Tokaido print is not easily understood: Making paper of cooking food, or what?
Hopefully understanding the cartouche will help.
Can you translate it for me?
Thanks a lot,
Francis

I translated the cartouche, and it says nothing about the scene: paper making or food cooking or what?
What do you think?

I believe the top two larger characters read Yoshiwara - 吉原
According to Wikipedia:
"Yoshiwara was a famous yūkaku in Edo, present-day Tokyo, Japan. Established in 1617, Yoshiwara was one of three licensed and well-known red-light districts created during the early 17th century by the Tokugawa shogunate, alongside Shimabara in Kyoto in 1640 and Shinmachi in Osaka."

Thank you Paul,
Yes, it reads Yoshiwara, but this is the name of a town, station 15 on the Tokaido SW of Edo. My question is about the meaning of the scene. What are the 3 persons doing?
Have a good day,
Francis

The MAK Vienna gives as description: "An old man, a boy and a woman working on a press. When making tofu?"
Inventory number: KI 11059-2 (no direct link possible).
The right column of the cartouche is the signature: "Gakyōjin Hokusai ga" (画狂人北齋画).

Thank you Horst,
The information I got from the Guimet museum is that the scene shows a step of the making of Shirosake, a 8-9° drink based on mirin, cooked rice, grains, sweet potato and koji. It was a specialty of Yoshiwara.
Have a good day,
Francis

The left column (https://www.syokubunka.or.jp/publication/gallery/nishikie/detail/post081.html ) reads: 蒲原ヘニリ卅丁 Kanbara ?????
No idea about the meaning.
