Subject:Identity bowl or cup

Enamel work is awesome. Unsigned. About 3.75 inches high and 4 inches across the lip. Foot is 1.25 inches. Many thanks for your time and knowledge. I created an album of photos. Always says file too big with my photos individually. Regards

Hi. You have a nice Japanese Satsuma ware cup. The current thinking is that most, if not all, of this type of ware decorated in colored enamels and gold was made for export starting in the early Meiji period just after Japan was opened for trade with the West. The earliest pieces were made in workshops and factories in present day Kagoshima prefecture (formerly, Satsuma province). Later, these wares were widely copied, e.g., in Kyoto and other places in Japan. While it is difficult to say with certainty, your cup appears to be a Kagoshima product from the early to mid-Edo period. Perhaps an expert will weigh in.
