Subject:Buddha statue possibly Zhu Mao Sheng?
Posted By: Sam Mon, May 25, 2020 IP: 2a02:c7f:a77:a000:cc

Hello, I have a buddha statue with a makers stamp on the bottom.

I think it might be Zhu Maosheng however the stamp doesn't look identical to others I have seen - the top 2 characters match but the remaining characters do not.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Thank you

I believe the mark on your image of the 'Budai Heshang', or Cloth Sack Monk, probably reads down and across from the top right as 'Made under the Mark of Zhu Mao' (Zhu Mao Ji Zao - 朱茂記造). The similar 'Budai' image at the link below, sold by Christie's in July 2016 for US$1500, had the same mark enclosed in an oval cartouche between the characters for Jingdezhen (abbreviated Jingzhen) and Jiangxi (the province). The image was dated 'early 20th century', however virtually all such marks date to the Republic era, in my opinion.

The Budai Heshang, also called the 'Happy Buddha', is an avatar of the Mortal Buddha Maitreya.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Marking reads,
朱茂記造 - Made by Zhu Maoji

Zhu Maosheng is written 朱茂生

I think they were relatives (father and son, brothers or master and disciple)
