Subject:Chnese Hat Stand - Inscription & Approx. Date please
Posted By: Peter Thu, Jan 16, 2020 IP: 77.119.128.178

Hello again, I've recently added a Chinese hat stand to my little collection and would very much appreciate any expert help regarding -

(a) The approximate age of the stand. The base is not marked. I assumed it to be late Qing or early Republic, but would appreciate your views.

(b) If possible, a translation of the script on the reverse.

Sorry about the poor quality images, but hopefully they should do the job.

Regards,

Peter

Hi Peter,
In my opinion your item is a vase rather than a hat stand.
Hand stands generally had venting holes due to the humidity etc.
I believe your vase dates from early PROC.

Hello Mark,
Many thanks for your valued opinion - it's very much appreciated.
So that I can perhaps broaden my very limited knowledge - it would be interesting for me to know what the specific features are that suggest that the vase is early PRC and not, say, late Republic.

Best Wishes,
Peter

Hi Peter,
I get the feeling that it is probably early PROC based on the figures.
If you could provide a picture of the base, then perhaps I can be more definitive in my opinion.

At the risk of being called politically incorrect, the Chinese historic translation of 美人 has been "a beauty" as in "a belle". Thus, with my opinion coinciding with Mike's in reading the third character as ru/如, my translation of 美人如玉 would be "Beauties are like jade" or "Beautiful women are like jade". Men have their share of terms for "handsome", including 俊/jùn (same character pronounced zùn can mean "cool" or "neat"), 姚/yáo (Also a family name; you reckon their men have more fun" :) and 帥/shuài (root meaning of "military leader").

Best regards,

Bill H.
