Subject:Foot-washing Scroll
Posted By: Bill H Thu, Nov 15, 2018 IP: 2601:342:200:2191:a5

I received these photos recently from a friend seeking help identifying the painter and value of this scroll, which appears to be painted on silk. My inclination is that it perhaps is better saved in a regular frame than going to the expense to restore it as a scroll. However, I am not an expert in these things and hope to get forum advice more befitting the item.

First of all, I can read the title of “Zhuozu Tu” (濯足圖) “Foot-washing Picture”, and the first character of the signature and red seal appears to start with the surname “Xue” (雪), while the other character may or may not be Zhou”(洲). I’d appreciate verification or corrections. I couldn't find an obvious information on a painter of that name, so perhaps it is a style name or other artistic signature.

My best guess is that this scroll was displayed for years in a sunny spot where it faded greatly, whereas the matting stained darker from atmospheric pollution and age. The roller ends look like Bakelite or plastic I’ve seen on other scrolls from a decade or so before and after World War II. The painting style appears to be circa late 19th-early 20th century, compared mainly to porcelain painting I’ve seen from that period. Its dimensions on the painted portion are 26” x 44.5”.

Any and all comments and suggestions will be appreciated.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Dear Bill,

Signature and seal,
雪洲 - Xuezhou - Pseudonym
In two of my dictionaries I have found only one Qing Dynasty painter with this pseudonym, whose name is
王猷 Wang You from Wu county (Jiangsu), year of birth and death unknown, poet and painter.
His other pseudonym was 雪舟 Xuezhou.

Greetings I. Nagy,

I'm most appreciative of your assistance. Using the name Wang You (王猷), I retrieved a Google record on someone identically named, who was a Wanli-period Ming bureaucrat in Zhejiang from 1599-1605, but didn't share either of the pseudonyms of the poet-painter. My search efforts probably will take some time, since there's a fairly well known Japanese painter from the Muramachi Period named Sesshu Toyo (雪舟等楊 - 1420-1506) who has the "Xuezhou" characters in his name. I rather doubt that the painting I'm researching dates to the Ming period, but your findings are encouraging as to the possibilities of finding other details somewhere.

Best regards and many thanks,

Bill H.

Dear Bill,

Your Wang You 王猷 alias Xuezhou 雪洲 was a Qing
painter. Qing is not Ming, it ended only a little more than 100 years ago. Beside of Google, it is good if we do have some books on the shelves. Tōyō Sesshu is out of question.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Much obliged for the clarification. I find Sesshu to be a problem for me only because of the large volume of clutter his name produces when trying to search the name "Wang You" in characters. It's a chore to sort him out of the thousands of results, where he gets the lion's share. Still a rather popular artist nowadays.

Thanks again,

Bill H.
