Subject:symbol interpretation 2 of 2
Posted By: RAS Fri, Sep 21, 2018 IP: 2601:205:4100:3102:9

So this is the 4th stepping stone and I would naturally think it would be Winter but I am not able to match it up to anything I have found on the WWW. It would be great to know what this symbol represents and which way is up/down. Thank you in advance for any help you are able to provide.

This is 冬 - Fuyu - Winter
with a strange combination of the hiragana ふ "fu" (top) and katakana ユ "yu" (down)
With regards,
I.Nagy

the left half does indeed look like 冬 (winter), the right half perhaps something in katakana, フユ perhaps?

Yes, this is the winter one. But the carver, probably knowing noting at all about characters but was copying from some source, has also carved the katakana characters FuYu on the side.

The calligraphy on these four stones is so bad, they might be better served if placed face down.
