Subject:Chinese Wedding Chest - 'painters filling' and new paint
Posted By: Niels Aabye Madsen Sat, Jul 14, 2018 IP: 2a00:7660:6ae:0:b530

I have a question to old Chinese ‘painters fillings’. I am trying to restore an old chemise weeding chest and have encountered a small problem. Just below the old pain is a layer of what I think is ‘painters fillings’ or putty. When I remove it, it turns into dust. Is this true – is it a kind of filling or something else ???

The paint is, I guess, in fact wax and is very sticky and the chest has a very bad smell – any recommendation to what kind of paint I should use to make a nice finish and preferably also can encase the bad smell ???

Hello Niels
I'm not a restorer but there are many here so you will I'm sure get a reply. I make and use my own putty and remove and replace loads of it. Putty,
(at least the old fashioned stuff), from my experience never just crumbles to dust. It doesn't matted how old it is. I'm sure Asia was more aware than us of the qualities of lime and linseed mixes so would have used fillers of the type. Is the wood rotted through perhaps?. Rot can cause powder damage especially if the woodworm haven't got to it. I'll watch this thread. Good Luck. D
