Subject:Antique ancestor paintings
Posted By: J Donnellon Sat, Jan 27, 2001

Can anyone help with ID of rank, status, area and dating (desirability, value etc)of these two gouache or tempera paintings on paper affixed to a beige brocade backing sheet.Detail is very fine. The sheet that the old man is painted on is 41 1/2" x 24" (excluding backing sheet) and the younger is about 28" x 24". Paint is bright and excellent. One has a few creases.I don't see a chop or signature - is this typical ? Thank you.

The lady in question is the wife of an eighth rank civil official (if I am seeing the bird correctly as a light coloured quail). The face is photographic in style, denoting a post 1880-1911 dating, and possibly early 20th century even after the fall of the Imperial dynasty. They are very collectable in the market and there is demand especially in the US.
