Subject:Opium Pipe 1
Posted By: Chandra Mon, Apr 02, 2018 IP: 161.142.107.195

I have been bequeathed an ivory and wood Chinese opium pipe about 45cm long (18in) that I know hardly anything about. Would someone be able to tell me about the period it may have originated from? Thank you.

Hey, Chandra. The pipe is a reproduction, most likely from the mid to late 20th century. It's made of bone, not ivory. Pipes like this are commonly sold as tourist souvenirs and are not meant to be smoked.

Here's a link to a website with almost everything you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask about opium.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you, Perro614. That would probably explain why it was obtained quite cheaply. Thank you too for clarifying that it is actually made of bone. Cheers! 🙏🏼
